Q. I’ve been going to the gym for the last 5 months and I still have not seen any results. I get on every single machine there, shouldn’t that be enough? What am I doing wrong?

A. It is not uncommon for the new comers to feel overwhelmed at the gym. Tons of unfamiliar equipment and the lack of knowing what to do with it can be very intimidating. Heading for the machines feels like a safe alternative, however, depending on your goals, it is not always the best way to train. Machines are a great tool for someone who never exercised before, someone rehabilitating from an injury or someone who has a weakness in a particular body part, but that’s not most people. An average person functions in a multi-directional way and most machines are limited to one directional movements. To get the most benefit from a workout you should incorporate free weights, cables and machines that allow more functional, compound movements.

Q. I’m getting bored with my routine, what can I do to change it up?

A. One word about routines, they get old pretty fast. Your body’s job is to maintain its homeostasis, so a given routine is only effective for the first 4-6 weeks, after that your body adapts and stops producing results.
